The following is the information about the 2024 Scottsboro BBQ Festival Backyard Competition. The Scottsboro BBQ Festival only uses certified KCBS judges.
• Entry fee per team is $150 if paid by Aug. 31 $175 after Sep. 1.
• Sanctioned by the Kansas City Barbecue Society and Alabama Barbecue Association.
• Check-In Times: Friday, Oct. 11 6pm-8pm OR Saturday, Oct. 12 6am-7am.
• All contestants must attend a mandatory meeting Saturday, Oct. 12 at 7:30am.
• Meat must be cooked on site wood, charcoal or wood pellets are acceptable (See KCBS rules for details).
• Two categories: Ribs and Chicken (contestants must participate in both).
• Entries will be judged on appearance, taste, and texture (KCBS Cooking & Judging Rules apply).
• Contestant must provide meat, power, water and any necessary supplies and equipment.
• If using a generator, please understand that the generator must be 70dB or less.
• If a contestant wishes to be a vendor, a vendor fee will be required. No contestant shall vend food or merchandise unless authorized. Contestants may also enter People’s Choice (see below.)
• Judging begins at 4pm (Chicken due at 4pm, Ribs due at 4:30pm). Awards announced at 6pm.
• Trophies awarded to Grand Champion, Reserve Grand, and 1st/2nd/3rd place finishers in each category.
• Prize money: Grand Champion ($700), Reserve Grand ($500), Payout to top five winners of each category as follows: 1st ($300), 2nd ($250), 3rd ($200), 4th ($150), 5th ($125).
• Backyard Battle Royal: The 2024 Scottsboro BBQ Festival has joined with four other competitions, offering the chance to win higher payouts! Rules - (1) Must compete in all 5 KCBS events listed below. (2) Best 4 our of 5 scores used to determine winners. (3) Scores for chicken and ribs only will be used to ensure all contests are equally weighted. (4) The total for both categories will be the metric used to determine the winners. The team with the highest score wins. (5) The winners will be announced at the Scottsboro BBQ Festival. Prize Money - 1st place is $2,000. 2nd place is $500.
Competitions: Singing River Smoke-o-rama (March 22-23), High on the Hog Festival (May 17-18), Ditto Landing reelin'-n-Smokin (June 7-8), St. Bernard Prep Blues & BBQ (Sep. 6-7), and Scottsboro BBQ Festival (Oct. 11-12). The Backyard Battle Royal is optional participation.
